With 20 years Arnold Schwarzenegger became the youngest Mr. Universe. Since he was a little boy he dreamed of moving to the USA and becoming a great star. In 1968 Joe Weider invited Arnold to train in the USA. He continued body building to become Mr. Universe 5 times and Mr. Olympia 7 times. His acting career started in 1969 with ‘Hercules in New York’ and made him one of the biggest stars in the 80s and 90s. His childhood dreams turned into reality because he positioned himself for networking success!

The Biggest Networking mistake is to stay at home!

If you want to be a successful networker or successful in general, you need to position yourself. You have to be at the right place at the right time. You can be a great conversationalist, follow all the networking rules, but if you don’t go visit the right places, you will never be successful in networking. This means, you have to visit events and places to meet (new) people. It also means that you have to stay in the proximity of the right people.

You have to leave your comfort zone!

The most important part is to visit places and events, where the people are you want to meet. Even if it means to force yourself to go! You have to get out of your comfort zone. Let’s face it: we can’t build deep relationships by staying at home. That is the hardest part. Eighty percent of success is showing up. If you choose places and events wisely, you will connect with people effortless.

Characteristics of good places and events

Some places and events are better than other to connect with people. The better ones

  • give a reason to talk to each other

  • they convent similar people

  • they happen regularly

  • they have a core group of people, regulars, but also new people.

The first two points make it easy to start a conversation. The two last points will make it easy to stay in touch and to reach circles outside the event.

Positioning yourself for success means putting yourself in the proximity of the right people. This isn’t limited to the location.

Effective places and events for networking success:

  • Jobs: Some Jobs are ideal positions for networking. For example, social workers get in contact with many people. Nevertheless, in every job you can find ways to position yourself for success

  • Living Situation: Having the right roommate will bring you in the best position to connect with his network. Living in a big city is also an advantage. More people more opportunities

  • Courses (in College): You can use courses to meet people with the same interests

  • Clubs and Organization: Like the courses you will meet people with the same interests. But in clubs and organization people tend to share the same mentality

  • Sport: Watching games gives you the opportunity to connect with other fans. It is more beneficial to play. You can create real deep connections with other players by working towards the same goal

  • Religion: Participating at religious events is perfect to meet people with the same faith. Often times religious institutes are the foundation of a community. Especially in villages

  • Kids: You need to be friends with the parents, of your kids friends. That is going to happen. If you like the parents or not. You can influence it, by putting your kid in the right environment.

  • Bars/Pubs: Bars and Pub are the classics. The easiest way is to play games like Dart or Billiard. You can challenge others and get to know them. Don’t pick places where people are just sitting!

  • Online: You can join groups and discussions online. There are groups for everything online. You can use them as a stepping-stone to meet in the real world

Arnold positioned himself to meet other bodybuilder, by training in the gym and participating in body building competitions. He gratefully accepted Joe Weiders invitation to the USA. Once again he positioned himself but this time to meet people in the movie industry. Later he married a Kennedy. With help of his wife he entered the political circles. With the support of his new friends, he became governor of California. The highest position a foreigner can reach in the USA.
