There is no how to for happiness. There is no magic pill that makes happy either. Instead, there are key factors that influence happiness. One of the most influential key factors are expectations.
Have you ever tried to solve a really hard problem? A problem you can’t google the answer to; or ask somebody else. A problem nobody ever had before you. The ability to solve such problems can change your life and is very valuable. If you want to learn how to solve hard problems you should read Problem Solving 101.
Ken Watanabe is the author of Problem Solving 101. (No, not the famous actor!) In the preface he explains why he wrote the book:
As you may have noticed I end all my articles with the phrase deo volente. Recently I started to use it in my private messages. Many people asked me what it means and why do I use it. So I’m going to explain what it means here.
In the first part of this article I was writing about how porn is unnatural, addictive and the influence on masculinity. Sadly that’s not everything. Porn also influences at least two more important areas in your life. Your social life and your sex life.
Porn is one of the biggest problems today. Most people think porn is harmless, but it isn’t. It affects us negative in many ways. It makes it hard to be masculine and impossible to be a stoic. If you want to be, like I, masculine and a stoic you have to stop watching porn. But first, you need to understand the toxic influence porn has on your mind.
“No one is immune from addiction; it afflicts people of all ages, races, classes, and professions.” – Patrick J. Kennedy
Most men are PUSSYS! Most men are weak, emotional cowards, that follow the masses. Stoicism demands to live according to nature. Man’s true nature is to be masculine! Man’s nature is to be strong, courageous and to lead. Embrace your masculinity to live according to nature!
Today’s meaning of human nature is the complete opposite to the meaning in ancient Greek or Rome. Both interpretations make sense and are valid. Yet, they lead to different meanings for “living according to nature.” But, they are not mutual exclusive. Actually, I think both meanings belong together. I think we need both meanings to live happy and good lives!
In this very funny episode of comedians in cars getting coffee Jerry Seinfeld’s guest is Bill Burr. They talk about everything under the sun. At one point Bill talks about a philosophy he lives by. With a simple example he summarizes two powerful ideas. Living according to this philosophy makes life much easier! Let’s look at it.
Stoicism is a philosophy with great focus on the mind. The Stoics found and used many psychological techniques, like negative visualization. The Stoics also gave practical, pragmatical advice on various topics like grief, anger and life itself. Applying the techniques and advice leads to a virtuous life. But, all that plays in the mind. I want to introduce some tangible tools to stoicism: The Stoic Thinking Tools.
We need a more powerful and new stoicism! That insight leads us to following question: How do we create the new modern-day stoicism? Simple! We answer the same questions as the old Stoics with our modern-day knowledge.
