In this very funny episode of comedians in cars getting coffee Jerry Seinfeld’s guest is Bill Burr. They talk about everything under the sun. At one point Bill talks about a philosophy he lives by. With a simple example he summarizes two powerful ideas. Living according to this philosophy makes life much easier! Let’s look at it.
“… he said, Bill you don’t want to be the guy that owns the boat. You want to be the guy that has the friend that owns the boat. Let him deal with the docking fees and scraping the barnacles off… You just show up with a twelve pack and you’re a hero … “ – Bill Burr
No, he is not literally talking about boats, but life in general. Bill’s career is a good example how he applied the philosophy. Bill, much like George Carlin, is a very direct and provocative comedian. At least some people think so. They ask, how he gets away with some of his “crude” jokes.
Easy! Bill has no TV-show or other outlets you can take away from him. How should somebody punish him; force him to do comedy in strip clubs. He is already doing that. He has no boat you can take away from him. Thus, he can say whatever he likes without fear of loss.
On the other side, Bill uses other peoples boats for his success. He performs on other peoples Late night shows, TV-shows and Comedy clubs. He has a weekly podcast on Youtube. Nothing you can take away from him.
Two very powerful ideas
You don’t need to own things to have a good life. You don’t need to own things to have success and happiness. Wealth and ownership are not requirements for a good life!
Stoicism teaches that mindset is crucial. Our mindset determines if we are having a good, fulfilled and happy life. A poor man can have a good life as well as a rich man can have a miserable life. Mindset is crucial!
With ownership comes fear and responsibilities. People almost never think about the downsides of owning a yard, a big house, a fast car. Try to outsource as much of these problems as you can!

StoicTriumph is a twelve pack
I know how to code and make my own website / blog. Still, I use WordPress and a hosting service. I don’t want to worry about all the technical details and security issues. Also, if something happens I can change to another platform in days.
In one sentence, I outsourced all the non writing related issues. Thus, I can focus on writing and marketing.
… You want to be the guy that has the friend that owns the boat. Let him deal with the docking fees and scraping the barnacles off… You just show up with a twelve pack and you’re a hero …
